Sign up for more than one emergency alert, Code Red is a start. Twitter alerts from Cal Fire, El Dorado County Sheriff, and the Placerville CHP have been reported as good sources of information, and may be faster and more informative for fire and smoke information than Code Red. Code Red is used to notify subscribers of evacuation needs.

Signing up is just one step you can take. Alerts don’t always work perfectly though so be aware of your surroundings. If you are concerned, call your neighbors. Neighborhood phone trees are a good thing to think about setting up ahead of time. Use your best judgement. If you feel concerned, leave. Don't wait to be told to evacuate.

Be sure to create defensible space, plan evacuation routes, etc. Alerts are great but there’s not always time to get them. Be ready to go when you need to and remember to evacuate early whenever you can.

Sign up to get Twitter alerts on your cell phone from Cal Fire, the El Dorado County Sheriff, and Placerville CHP. It's a good idea to get alerts from more than one source. According to some news articles, Paradise residents reported that Code Red alerts went out much later (sometimes hours) than Twitter alerts.

Get Quicker, But Not Always Verified, Info

Sometimes we want fast information. Scanners and sites like Nextdoor, Yubanet, and FaceBook may get updates out more quickly than some of the other, more official, sources. Keep in mind, though, that these may include opinions, unverified info, or mistaken observations.

Develop a Neighborhood Phone Tree

Remember your neighbors who may not have cell phones or receive alerts! Organizing a telephone tree might be a good idea for your area.

Getting a heads-up about planned power outages makes sense. If you live in PG&E’s service territory, your electricity could be shut off for longer than 48 hours during a Public Safety Power Shutoff.
